This PA Dutch favorite was named from the history of chasing flies away from their pies. Ladies would put their pies outside on a pie table to cool. The flies would swarm around because of the sugar in the molasses. The ladies would "shoo" the flies away with their hands and towels hence the name Shoofly Pie.
